7th Annual Open Mic Day

In honor of National Poetry Month, all my classes will be participating in Open Mic Day.
On Thursday, April 30th we will be reciting poems in the auditorium.
For your grade you need to read a poem that is at least 12 lines long.  You can find your poem online, in a book, write your own poem or even read song lyrics.
If you memorize your poem you will earn extra credit points.

This is a 2,4,6 day so my 1,3,5 students will receive an indoor field trip form to come during one of the periods.  There is no make-up.
Grade - 10 points

Let's keep the tradition alive and celebrate poetry!

Assignment Update

Here is a revision of the weekly assignments:

Advice Presentation -- I am extending the deadline until the end of April to make your presentations.  It is worth 20 points so it is extremely important to complete it.

Week of April 20th: Earth Day Assignment -- We will be watching a documentary in class and you will need to answer how you can help the environment.
Extra Credit:  Bring to me your ticket stub from seeing the movie Monkey Kingdom opening week (April 17th - April 24th).

Week of April 27th:  Open Mic Day -- Make sure you are selecting a poem that you can recite for this day.  In honor of National Poetry month we will be reading poems outloud.  You do not have to memorize it.  It needs to be at least 12 lines long.  You can find your poem in the textbook, online or you can read a poem you wrote yourself.

Week of May 4th:  Teacher Appreciation and Mother's Day Assignment -- I am combining these two assignments because Mother's Day is May 10th.  You will be creating cards for your favorite teacher and for your mother or a mother figure in your life.

FYI

Take Your Child to Work Day is this Friday, April 10th.  If you do not want to be marked unexcused make sure to turn in the blue field trip form by Wednesday, April 8th.

P.S. My birthday is April 8th. :)

Advice Presentation details

You will be giving advice to the underclassmen about a topic of your choice.  The topic should be related to high school such as how to make it to graduation or preparing for your future in college or SAT/ACT prep, etc.

The first step is letting me know who you will be working with or if you will be working by yourself.  There is a limit of two people.
The next step is telling me the name of the teacher's class that you will be presenting to.  Make sure that you get approval from that teacher ahead of time.
Then you need to figure out a topic that you will be presenting and getting my approval of it.

Requirements for the presentation:
1. It should be on a Powerpoint, Prezi or Virtual Board using Discovery Education.  That will make the overall presentation easier because you will give the teacher your USB drive and they can put your presentation on the board for the whole class to see.
2.  It needs to be 5-10 minutes long.
3. Make sure that your presentation is informative while also being interesting.  You want to make sure the class you are presenting to is engaged in your presentation (not falling asleep).

I will provide you with a rubric to give to the teacher so that they can provide me with feedback on your presentation.

You can begin presenting the week of April 13th.  Worth 20 points.

Also, to replace the weekly SAT/ACT question you will be turning into me a weekly "Thing I Learned" (TIL).  In a paragraph you will basically share with me something you learned about life or knowledge in general.  It could be as technical as a new concept you learned in one of your classes or something about life such as how to deal with getting pulled over by a cop.  Through this assignment I just want you to be aware that everyday is a chance to learn something new and that you should always be learning.

You can turn in assignments early.  This is especially a good idea if you know you will be out for Grad Bash, testing, etc.

I will be posting the details about each of the above assignments so you can get a head start.

Looking forward to finishing off the year strong!
