Extra Credit

If you are interested in doing Extra Credit for the second nine weeks please come and see me. It will be due after the winter break and will consist of you creating small posters of our SAT words.
See me before we go on the break to be issued a letter.

Holiday Song Project

So since everyone is getting in the holiday spirit and looking forward to the Winter Break I have created the following project:

1. You will select a holiday song. You can work by yourself or with a group of no more than four(4) people.
2. You will turn in the following information to me (typed) --
A. The history of the song (make sure to include who wrote it, when it was first recorded, who first sang it, how many times it has been remade)
B. What is the meaning of the song? Find the deeper meaning not just the literal meaning.
C. Any literary devices that the song uses. (similes, metaphors, symbolism, alliteration, onomatopeoia, etc.)
3. Your visual aid must include the lyrics of the song. You can create a video, skit, powerpoint, etc.)
4. You do not have to sing the song yourself. You can lipsync or just have pictures associated with your song.

Remember to have fun, but do a good job!

Due on Wednesday, 12/15 (2,4,6) and Thursday, 12/16 (1,3,5).
Worth 10 points (doubled)

Friday, November 19, 2010

Week of October 18th

So the nine weeks is almost over and I have closed the gradebook as of October 22nd.
I am only inputting missing grades. Any grades earned this coming week will count for the new nine weeks.

1. The Bill of Rights Amendment partner activities were completed and those grades will be the last for this nine weeks. For the most part, everyone did a good job and came up with some great reasons "for" and "against" the amendments.
2. This week we finished with our next set of SAT words (I-L), which means the quiz will be this coming week.
3. We finished watching "The Patriot" and started our follow-up activity with letters to someone at war.

**Things to look forward to this coming week:
Edgar Allen Poe, a perfect author to read in order to prepare for Halloween.
Continuing with the letter activity. We will be exchanging letters this coming week.

Hope you all have a great and safe weekend!

Week of October 11th

Bill of Rights, PSAT, The Patriot, oh my!!!!

1. Everyone this week should have gotten a partner and an amendment from the Bill of Rights (Amendments 1-10) that you are going to argue "for" and "against." You need to come up with 5 reasons in favor of your amendment and 5 reasons against it. You will be debating in front of the class with your partners this coming week. Make sure to refer to page 222 and 223 in the textbook for persuasive rhetoric strategies.

2. On Wednesday many of you took the PSAT and I have gotten good feedback from most of you. I will continue to prepare you for the actual SAT and ACT as the year progresses.

3. We will finish watching "The Patriot" this coming week and will be doing a follow-up activity with it. (Hint: Remember how they wrote letters to one another.)

**I am closing my gradebook this coming Friday, October 22nd so make sure you have turned everything in and if you have been absent within the last two weeks get those admits to me in order to make-up any assignments you have missed.

Homecoming Week

Literary Analysis essays are done! HURRAY!!!! Now I get to grade them all. OH NO!!!!

I have a few things I want to address concerning some behavior I have observed in the last couple of weeks:

1. Deadlines are issued for a reason. If you do not turn in an assignment on time that is your own fault. I could understand if I gave you a major project to complete in one day, but I give you time and I not only explain how to do it in class I also write the instructions on the blog. Do not take advantage of my benevolence. Do your work and turn it in on time. End of story.

2. Some of you have been absent for several classes. It is your responsibility to bring me an excused admit or the pass that was given to you if you left school early. At that point you have only one week to make up the work. After that I have all the right to put in a zero.

Otherwise, those of you who are doing everything you are supposed to be doing -- thank you for being diligent students. Keep up the good work.
*Remember, the first nine weeks is not over. However, I will be closing my gradebook by October 22nd so that any missing work after that date will go in as a zero.

This coming week the Bill of Rights partner activity will be issued.
We will be continuing with our SAT words (I-L).
PSAT test, for those who registered, is on Wednesday (10/13).

Hope you had a great homecoming week! Will post pictures soon.

September has come to an end...

So we are focusing on writing our first Literary Analysis papers based on the story "The Minister's Black Veil" by Nathaniel Hawthorne.
You should have completed your outline worksheets, rough drafts and prepare to do peer editing and typing up your final drafts in the computer lab this week.
We have completed our next set of 20 SAT words -- the E-H words. That means this coming week you will have the quiz on those words.

You should also be completing your Benjamin Franklin assignment.
1. Your greeting card should have one of Benjamin Franklin's aphorisms from pg. 271 on the front.
2. On the inside front cover you need to write five facts about Benjamin Franklin.
3. On the inside you are picking one of the 13 virtues from pg. 266. Write the virtue and its description. Then tell me in a paragraph how you would apply that virtue to your life. How would it make your life better?
**On the back of your card (for extra points) you can have up to five teachers, coaches, administrators sign that they would purchase your greeting card.

*Summer Reading projects were turned in for a grade.

I still have grades to put into the gradebook so just be patient.

Week of September 20th

Family Tree projects have been presented and now I have the task of reading all your memoirs and interviews. (Yippee!!!! I am being facetious by the way.)

Progress Reports were issued Friday. There is time to improve your grade, but don't ask to make something up from three weeks ago. Not going to happen.

You have started to work on your Literary Analysis of the "Minister's Black Veil" and we will continue with those papers this coming week.

SAT Vocabulary sentences are being done and we should be done with E-H this coming week.

Summer Reading Projects are due this week! You are required to do two, but at least do one if you do not want a zero for the assignment.

Survey for Talent Show

I am considering participating in the upcoming talent show that will be held on October 7th and would like to know if you have any suggestions of what I could do.
I was told I can perform by myself or even with a group of my students. Would any of you be interested in doing something with me or would you like to see me perform solo?

I can sing a song or play something on the piano or flute. If you are interested in doing something as a group please let me know ASAP.

Please post your suggestions to the blog or bring up the topic in class the next time you see me.

Thursday, September 16, 2010

Important Reminders

Family Tree Project are due this coming week -- September 21st and 22nd!
Progress Reports will be issued this week. (Yes, it is that time already.)
Don't forget Summer Reading Projects due September 30th. (Refer to the readingheadquartersathghs.blogspot.com website)

What we accomplished this week:

PSAT Info and Family Tree Project Clarification

As 11th graders, you can register to take the PSAT, which will be given on October 13th. The fee to register is $13. However, if you are on free/reduced lunch you can register for free. Registration will take place during lunch in the cafeteria in the teacher's lounge with Ms. Abesada or Ms. Sierra. You must register by September 21st. I also have been given some copies of the registration form so you can ask me for a form and you can turn it in during lunch.
This is good practice for the actual SAT test.

Family Tree Clarification:
1. Some of you have asked about the question you have to answer regarding the story "The Way to Rainy Mountain." If you want to include your answer at the top of your memoir that is fine. Just make sure it is clear that you are answering that question and separate it from your memoir.
2. When presenting your family tree you do not have to share your memoir or interview of a relative. However, I will ask you how your parents met and if they were not born in the United States how they got here. If you discover any famous relatives I would also like you to include that in your presentation. For example, last year students had family members that were members of the goverment or had invented things, etc.
3. Your Family Tree does not have to look like a tree. You can be creative in how you present it.

Another week bites the dust

Okay, so we are rolling right along into our fourth week of school. What we have accomplished so far:

*Took quiz on the Native Americans and their storytelling culture.
*Watched part of "The New World" and wrote a movie critique on it.
*Started SAT Vocabulary words A-D with sentences.
*Moving into the Colonial American writers

IMPORTANT-- OPEN HOUSE on September 14th at 6:30pm

Remember to review your SAT vocabulary words A-D because there will be a quiz on them this coming week.
Make sure you are working on your Family Tree Projects (due Sept. 21 or 22) and your Summer Reading Projects (by Sept. 30).

Movie critique

You can visit the following website for steps, an example, and other information about how to write a movie critique.

Second Week done

Many activities were accomplished this week:
*We read the Native American trickster tale the "Coyote and Buffalo"
*Groups summarized other Native American stories
*We began our SAT Vocabulary practice with the A & B words and wrote sentences for each word.
*We read "The General History of Virginia" by John Smith
*We shared our results from the two personality tests (Gregoric and Myers/Briggs)

Upcoming assignments:
1. Native American quiz (hint: listen to the Native American playlist)
2. Family Tree Project
3. SAT words continued
4. Summer Reading Projects (due September 30th)

Quick observations--
Make sure all work turned into me is done in blue or black pen only. Pencil or a different color ink will lose points.
If you are absent you need to bring an excused admit first before I can issue make-up work. You should ask your classmate or check the blog before asking me what you missed. This is part of learning how to be independent and responsible.

Hope you all have a safe and restful Labor Day!

First Week Observations and Updates

I am feeling very positive after meeting all of you this first week of school.
We have discussed this year's theme of Defining Yourself and you turned in your assignment for that. We also began learning about the Native Americans and their storytelling traditions.

**Don't forget that next week I will begin collecting the weekly SAT Question of the Day. Remember you can print it out, write out the question with your answer and whether you got it right or wrong, or email it to me.

School Pictures will be taken on August 30th and 31st through English class. Make sure you bring your money if you want to purchase your pictures. You must take the picture in order to get your school id.

Summer Reading Projects:
For those of you who want to get a jump start on your projects here is the website that contains the list of books and creative projects that you can pick from:

readingheadquartersathghs.blogspot.com

You need to go down and find where it says Creative Book Report Ideas and go to the second slide on the Summer Reading Slide show to find the list of books.

Remember they are due by September 30th and will be worth a total of 20 points.

Coming up this week--

1. We will start our SAT Vocabulary practice.
2. I will be issuing each of you a literature book to take home and keep at home.
3. There will be a Native American quiz coming soon. Make sure you are reviewing your notes.
4. Family Tree project will be issued.

Defining who we are

Part of defining who we are is knowing what our learning style and psychological personality is.

Visit the following websites and complete the tests to discover what your learning style and personality are. There are no right or wrong answers (it is not that type of test).

Gregoric test-- www.thelearningweb.net/personalthink.html

Myers/Briggs test-- www.personalitypathways.com/type_inventory.html

Bring in your results next class so we can share in class.

Novel Choices

Here are a list of novels that I would like you to consider for this school year. You will select as a class which 3-4 we will read during the course of this year. I would suggest you look up a brief summary of the novels so you make an informed decision before making your choices.

The Last of the Mohicans by James Fenimore Cooper
The Awakening by Kate Chopin
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest Gaines
The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand
Catch 22 by Joseph Heller

Play choices: The Crucible by Arthur Miller, A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams

Please feel free to make a suggestion if you have one. We will be voting on Wednesday and Thursday in class.

Welcome class of 2012

I am looking forward to meeting and teaching all of you this 2010-2011 school year.

If there is one thing I want you to focus on this year it is to DEFINE who you are. I will be preparing you to take the next step in your lives, which for most of you should be college and others the working world. For most of you the shadow of the FCAT has passed and now the challenge of the SAT and ACT are in front of you. I will be here to prepare you for those exams as well.
I want everyone in my class to succeed, but the only way that can happen is with your effort. This class will be challenging at times, but it is through challenges that we learn who we truly are.

Summer Suggestions

To all my former students and possible new students here are some suggestions for this summer:

1. Do the summer reading. You received the list of books with projects. Remember you are expected to complete two projects when we return in August. Don't start the year off on the wrong foot.

2. If you are still having difficulty interpreting what you read try reading the following book:
How to Read Literature Like a Professor by Thomas C. Foster. This book breaks down how to read any piece of literature in a very basic way.

3. Don't forget to continue practicing for the SAT or ACT especially if you still haven't taken it and plan on applying to college in the fall. I have the links posted on here.

4. Look into the colleges/universities you want to apply to now. Don't wait until the last minute.

Hope you are all having a great summer! Be safe.

Almost Done

First things first. I wish all of you a restful and safe Memorial Day weekend. No school on Monday! Yippee!!!!!

With that said, I have given back to you your index cards with your goals that you wrote down the very first day of school. Do not loose this card because it will be counted as points towards your final exam essay.
Final Exam Essay:
**Your essay will address whether you met your goals or not for this year. You need to clearly state your goals, whether you met them or not, explain why you did or didn't and make sure you include an introduction and conclusion paragraph. Use the skills we have worked on all year to show me your best writing.
It is your choice whether you would like to type up your final exam essay or not.
~Alternate final exam topic (for those that did not have me at the beginning of the school year only): What skills or lessons have you learned in my class that have been the most helpful?

Tuesday, June 1st my former students are coming to speak about their college experience. I passed out the green forms and those will be your pass out of class when they make the announcement. The presentation will be during 4th period from around 10-11:30. Make sure you think of some questions that you would like to ask them. This is a great opportunity -- take advantage.

Now that I have closed out the gradebook for the 4th nine weeks I would like to make some final observations.
1. Meeting deadlines -- Most of you learned this early on in the year and your grades reflect the responsibility of turning assignments in on time. Others of you have still not learned and I am sorry to say will continue to suffer not only academically, but also when you enter the workforce.
2. Lack of effort -- Most of your end of the year projects were creative and followed directions. Others were lacking (you know who you are). I know it is the end of the year and we all want to be done, but throwing something together without effort is not going to earn you a good grade. You should always try your best no matter how tired or unmotivated you are.
3. Don't bite the hand that feeds you -- Many of you have taken advantage of my kindness and understanding this year. To put it in SAT terms, I am a magnanimous person, but can only take so much. If you did not get a good grade this nine weeks you have no one to blame but yourself. Do not come asking me for a second chance because I have given you more than that. Some of you may not have gotten your 5 points needed for the second half of the year. You still have the final exam to make it happen.

Let's finish out the year strong!

Thursday, May 20, 2010

Year in Review Project

So we have reached the end of the year and it is time to revisit everything we have covered this year.

In your groups (4-6 people) you will create either a video or skit that will include the following components:

1. Present two of the topics we covered in class this year. You can do it in a funny or serious way. I do not want repetitions in each period so you need to let me know ahead of time what topics your group will be covering. You can either email me, post it to the blog or speak with me in person.
2. Include a favorite memory(ies) from this year. It could be serious or funny.
3. Video or skit should last 5-10 minutes. That means you should be thorough and specific with your topics because these presentations will be a sort of review for the final exam.
4. Submit to me a summary of the two topics and memory that you present with all the group members names on it.

If you have any additional questions please come and speak to me.

Due date: May 26th (periods 1,3,5) and May 27th (period 4)
Worth 10% of your 4th nine weeks grade.
There will be no extensions! You must present on your day.

Here Ye! Here Ye!

The Renaissance Festival will take place on Tuesday, May 18th.

I will offer 5 points extra credit to students who bring a main dish for the event. For example, Shepherd's pie, chicken, lasagna, pork, and stew. Please let me know ahead of time if you will bring something. You must bring the dish to my room first thing Tuesday morning so that I can input your points.

Please no desserts. 11th graders are scheduled to attend the event during 5th period.

Moving right along

Now that Mother's Day and Teacher Appreciation Week activities are done it is time to get back to our novel -- Fahrenheit 451. Here are some reading questions that you need to complete by May 11th (4th period) or May 12th (periods 1, 3, 5):
WRITE THE QUESTIONS!
(These questions apply to pages 1-40, which you already should have read. Refer to the blog from Friday, April 23rd.)

1. How is life in Guy Montag's house different from Clarisse's house?

2. What does Mildred do all day?

3. What inferences can you make about Guy and Mildred's relationship based on their conversations?

4. How is the Mechanical Hound described?

5. How does Clarisse describe school?

6. Why is Clarisse afraid of children her own age?

7. Do you agree with Clarisse's comment: "People don't talk about anything."? Explain why you agree or don't agree.

8. Who was the first fireman (according to the Fireman's handbook)?

9. What does Montag take from the house at Elm, City?

10. Why do you think the old woman, Mrs. Blake, is willing to burn with her books?

Some of you really need the points so just do it!

*End of the Year project will be discussed in class.

We have a Winner!!!!

Congratulations to Moises Altamirano who is a finalist in the Piano Slam poetry competition. He will be reciting his poem at the Adrienne Arsht Center next Wednesday, May 12th @ 7:30pm. Tickets are free if you go to www.arshtcenter.org

Grades and Assignments for week of May 3rd - 7th

You should have analyzed and scored your "Birthday Party" response by the end of the week. I want you to score it so that you learn what I am looking for when it comes to an on the spot literary analysis.

Mother's Day placemats need to be shown to me no later than Friday unless you want it laminated and in that case I need it by Wednesday. Remember it is a grade and Mother's Day is this Sunday. After Friday it is an automatic zero.

Teacher Appreciation activity:
You can either turn in a letter to me written to a favorite teacher or you can do something more creative like a Powerpoint or a picture that I can send via email to that teacher. This is also for a grade so don't let it pass you by. After Friday it is also an automatic zero.

Progress Reports come out on Thursday. Many of you will be receiving unsatisfactory notices mainly because you are not turning in required assignments. By this time of the year the SAT Question of the Day should be automatic -- you should be doing it in your sleep. Whether you are out or not you know it is due every Friday. There are no excuses. The Comparative Essay rough draft and final draft are worth 10% of your grade for the nine weeks. You are responsible for completing your work. I have shown you examples of how to write a thesis. There is link on this blog so you can see the format for the essay. I can not write the essay for you.

We will finally be going in for subject selection this week and it is important that you have your forms ready to go (i.e. Honors/AP Recommendation form signed by you, your parent, and teachers).

I have not forgotten about Fahrenheit 451. I will be providing you with reading questions to complete over the weekend.

Open Mic Day pictures

Here is the link to the Smilebox presentation Ms. Parra created of our Open Mic event:

I am so proud of all of you for sharing your poems with the class. I know for some of you speaking in public is very nerve racking, but you all did well. I can't wait until next year!

Mother's Day Placemat

You need to bring in your own materials for this assignment starting Thursday, April 29th or Friday, April 30th (depending on which day you have me).

Your grade will be based on the following components:

1. A Quote -- The quote you find should represent your mother or be inspirational in some way. (2 points)
2. Favorite Memory -- You will write about a memory you have of your mother (could be typed if your handwriting is not that great). (2 points)
3. Picture -- The picture can be of you with her or just you or just her. (2 points)
4. Her name -- Place her name somewhere on the placemat. (2 points)
5. Creativity -- This is where your use of supplies, and the above components will come into play. (3 points)
Using your own supplies is worth 3 points. Therefore, this assignment is worth a total of 14 points.

If you would rather create the placemat for another female figure in your life that is fine. For example, you can make one for your grandmother, aunt, godmother, etc.

Week of April 19 - 23

We have begun reading Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. As you read you should focus on Bradbury's diction, syntax, and overall beautiful writing style.
You are responsible for reading through page 40. The page ends with "Damn!" said Beatty. "You've gone right by the corner where we turn for the firehouse." (This is for those of you who have a downloaded version without page numbers.)
You need to show me your book by next Friday, April 30th or it will go in as a zero. In the meantime you can go to the following website:

http://kisi.deu.edu.tr/murat.goc/451.pdf

This week I gave the Fahrenheit 451 intro quiz. If you need to make it up make sure you bring me an admit and you need to make it up before the end of the week.

*This coming week we are scheduled to go to the Book Fair. They will have the summer reading books available to purchase. Most of the books run between $8-$15.

1. Open Mic Day poems -- Monday and Tuesday you need to give me the name of your poem so that I can be ready for Wednesday. Remember it can be written by you or someone else.
If you do not want to recite your poem you must turn an essay into me that addresses what the poem means and why you connect with it.
2. Mother's Day Placemat -- This coming week we will begin working on the placemats so you will need to bring in your materials to create them. Things like construction paper, markers, crayons, pictures, etc. I will tell you what you are required to put on your placemats and you will also have the ability to be creative.
3. Comparative Essay final drafts will be due by Friday, April 30th. You will only be able to type them in school. I will be grading them based on attention grabber, clear thesis, organized ideas in body paragraphs, use at least four quotes, and having a logical conclusion.

Earth Day / Take your son or daughter to work day

Okay, so I thought about it and decided to give an extra credit assignment in honor of Earth Day and Take your son or daughter to work day. Here are your two choices:

1. Explain 5 things that you currently do or could do to decrease your carbon footprint. Don't know what that means -- look it up and then give me your 5 examples. Consider saving paper and email it to me or post it to the blog.

2. If you go with your mom or dad to work on Thursday you have the following option: interview someone who works with your parents (ask them whether they enjoy what they do, what was their favorite class(es) when they were in high school, what advice would they give you before you graduate from high school). Make sure you include the name and position of the person you interview and the company and phone number they work for. I will verify whether the person works where you say they do, so don't embarrass me.

You have until Monday, April 26th to turn in your assignment for 5 points extra credit. If you do both that is great, but you will only get 5 points.

Week of April 12th-16th

What an eventful week! Thank you for all your support regarding SB6. Charlie Crist vetoed it yesterday and I would suggest we send an email with thanks because he could have taken the easy way out and done nothing. You can email him at:
Charlie.Crist@myflorida.com

1. In other news, we will be starting Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury this coming week and I will be checking for your novel. Make sure you get a copy from the bookstore, library or downloading it.
2. You also need to review your notes on Ray Bradbury and Fahrenheit 451 intro notes. There will be a quiz sometime this week. Don't be caught off guard!
3. Group presentations: Groups will present their topics next week (rising illiteracy, drug abuse, violence in society, population explosion, and materialism/commercialism). You will be graded on your definition of the topic, how it was seen in the 1950s, how it is in today's society and your conclusion as to whether Bradbury's predictions were correct. Total of 5 points doubled (10 points).
3. You will be peer editing and typing up your final drafts of the Comparative Essay this coming week.
4. Don't forget about selecting a poem to read for Open Mic Day on April 28th.

Subject selection is on its way. I will talk with you on an individual basis to discuss my recommendation for you regarding English for next year. Some thoughts to keep in mind:
*Honors/AP is a privilege and is for those students who have the goal of going to college. The purpose of these classes is to prepare you for the type of writing that will be expected of you on the college level.
*I have no idea who is teaching what next year and you should not base your decision off of the teacher, but what you want to get out of the class.
*You know the kind of person you are. If you know you will be one to get senioritis (some of you have that already) then maybe you should consider regular.

Upcoming assignments -- Teacher Appreciation letters and Mother's Day placemats.

Friday, April 9, 2010

Reminders and Info

*Don't forget to work on your Comparative Essay if you took it home to work on the rough draft.
**You need to obtain your novel for class by April 19th.

The end is near -- Spring Break here we come!

The Alice in Wonderland fieldtrip is this coming Friday, March 26th. Make sure to bring your fieldtrip forms filled out before Thursday. I would also like to decorate tshirts for the event so bring in a shirt to decorate to wear for the fieldtrip.

Thoughts for the 4th nine weeks (the last nine weeks, I'll try not to cry).
Idea 1: Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
Idea 2 : The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger
Idea 3: A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams
Idea 4: Make a suggestion
We will vote in class before we leave on Spring Break.

I would like to create a playlist for my birthday, so please send me your suggestions.

April is National Poetry Month and I have reserved the library for April 28th to hold Open Mic Day where everyone will read a poem of their choice.

Week of March 8th

Now that we have read through Chapter 8 of the Wizard of Oz here is the question you must answer:

What would you ask the Wizard for -- a brain, a heart or courage? You can not pick all three. You must pick one and explain why that is your choice. I will collect your responses by Thursday, March 18th or Friday, March 19th. Points will be based on the completeness of your answer and explanation.

Reminder that I will be collecting money for the Alice in Wonderland movie fieldtrip only until Friday, March 19th!!!! It is $15 and I need to know the final numbers so I can finalize the bus order as well as inform the movie theater of how many students will be attending so they can be prepared. The fieldtrip will be next Friday, March 26th (a 2,4,6 day).

Very important -- The nine weeks is coming to an end and it is your responsibility to make sure if you have any work to make up I must have an excused admit and you can only make up work from the last week. Anything that is two weeks or more overdue is too late.

Political Allegory in the Wizard of Oz

Read the following article written by Henry Littlefield titled "The Wizard of Oz: Parable on Populism." -- http://cdlee.files.wordpress.com/2007/11/littlefield-wizard-of-oz-parable-on-populism.pdf
If you have any issues with the link try copying and pasting it into the address bar.

You will turn into me 5 points that he makes about the Wizard of Oz and the connections to American history. This assignment is due to me by Friday, March 12.

Alice in Wonderland Fieldtrip

The date is Friday, March 26th (even day) and we are going to the IMAX theater at Aventura Mall. I know you are all excited as am I, but there are several things that we have to get done before then.

1. Start collecting money -- $15 (price of 3-D ticket and bus)
2. Fieldtrip forms (I will be getting those to you within the next week)
3. Creating Tshirts for the event. You can pick whatever color Tshirt you want to wear and decorate it based on some aspect of the novel.
4. I need chaperones. If you have your parents or a family member that is 21 years or older that can help us that day that would be great. Let me know ASAP.

Michael Jackson Project is here!

I am very much looking forward to seeing what you have created with your group songs. With that being said, let me make this peremptory statement:

1. THERE WILL BE NO EXTENSIONS!!!!
You will present with your group on the assigned date or you will receive a 0. Remember this assignment is worth 15 points (doubled).
2. If someone is sick or can not be there for the group that is their grade. Do not let your grade suffer for someone else.
3. Each group member should be helping with some aspect of the project. For example, helping with the lyrics, recording audio or video, doing the background information about the song, etc.
4. You must learn to work around obstacles and get done what needs to get done. If you want to make a video, but no one has a camera then you need to figure out something else.
5. I am grading each component based on the effort I see that was given. I should see honors level effort in the creativity that went into the lyrics and the performing component.

Good luck everyone! I know you are all capable of putting something amazing together.

Moving on to Somewhere Over the Rainbow

We will be making a connection to the American version of Alice in Wonderland by reading The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum. Please refer to the following website to read the chapters when I ask you to read for homework:

Michael Jackson Project

In honor of Black History Month and to also take on the task of creating your own parodies you will be given a Michael Jackson song in class. Once you have your song you must find the lyrics and turn it into a parody. (Think of Weird Al Yankovic and "Eat It.")

You have three components to complete with your groups:
1. Song Background - Tell me when the song was written or recorded, did it win any awards?
2. Parodied lyrics - You need to print me a copy of your new lyrics that you create. You don't have to change every single word, but remember what a parody is supposed to be -- a humorous imitation or exaggeration of the original song in this case.
3. Visual/Audio - Your group can either create a music video, record an audio version of your song, or perform your song as a skit in class. There is no escape so just be ready to laugh at yourself and just have fun!

The completed project will be due March 2 (Period 4) and March 3 (Periods 1,3,5)
for a total of 15 points.

I can't wait to see the finished products. I am looking forward to seeing what you create. :)

Reflections and upcoming assignments

First of all, thank you for the sonnets that were recited to me on Friday. It was very sweet and I appreciate you thinking of me. I truly have the best students around.

Now that we have held our own Tea Party in honor of Alice in Wonderland please write me a reflection of what you have learned from the novel. It does not have to be long. You can either post it as a comment, email me or write it out and turn it in on Tuesday or Wednesday. I need it no later than Wednesday. If you are posting a comment to the blog it must be before midnight on Wednesday or I will not give you points.

Make sure to bring your novels next week, especially if you have the version the has Through the Looking Glass because we are going to be doing a group activity with it.

Remember no school on Monday in honor of President's Day.

Observations and Updates

Over the past couple weeks I have noticed a trend with some students and I wanted to make a comment about it before it gets out of hand.

1.  When you are on a fieldtrip or are absent it is your responsibility to find out what you missed while you are out.  I don't know if you are aware, but when I receive emails from the teachers that take you on these fieldtrips they make it very clear that you understand that you must make up any work that you miss.  Before you come to class you should always check the blog and speak to a fellow classmate so that you can tell me specifically what you need.  Those of you who do this already I thank you for your maturity.

2. If you want full credit for an assignment you need to give me 100% effort.  This past week you were aware of the notebook check and yet many of you were still not prepared for it.  Many of you are loosing points for submitting assignments in pencil still.  Some of you are forgetting to submit the SAT Question of the Day, which we have been doing since the beginning of the school year.  At this point in the year I am tired of excuses so do what you need to do if you want to get a good grade.

Moving onto happier topics...
Don't forget about our Tea Party this coming Thursday (Periods 1,3,5) and Friday (Periods 4&6).  Your Concrete poems are due the same day.

Alice in Wonderland movie fieldtrip -- I am thinking it might be nice to save the fieldtrip until the end of the nine weeks before Spring Break.  Let me know which day the majority of you would prefer -- March 25th (Thursday) or March 26th (Friday).  I also will need chaperones so if any of your parents are available please let me know.  I need to start working on the fieldtrip forms and until I have the names of the chaperones I can not submit it.

Top secret -- Make sure you know the major events that have happened from Chapters 1-10 because there could be a pop quiz next week.

Beginning Alice in Wonderland

Please refer to the following link until you obtain your own copy of the book:
www.cs.cmu.edu/~rgs/alice-table.html

Make sure you are keeping up with your sentence summary and deeper meaning of each chapter. Remember that Alice in Wonderland is an allegory so you should always be reading and trying to find the symbolic meaning.

I want to be done with all the hallway decorations by Thursday so that we can decorate the hallway by Friday at the latest. If you have creative ideas please share them with me so we can make the hall as Wonderland-like as possible.

Grades for this week:
1. Wonderland Character
2. Novel check
3. Introduction quiz on notes
4. SAT Question of the Day

We will be completing our Q-T sentences this week, which means next week will be the quiz so make sure you are reviewing your definitions.

Thursday, January 21, 2010

Begin Reading Alice in Wonderland

As we read each chapter you need to write a one sentence summary for the events that take place. Below your sentence summary you will write down the lesson or deeper meaning of what is happening. For example:

Chapter 1: Down the Rabbit Hole
Summary - In the chapter Alice is...
Lesson/Deeper meaning - In the chapter we can learn...

You will do this for every chapter as we read and keep it in your Alice duotang folder.

**Reminders:
1. The third nine weeks starts on Monday so everyone starts with a blank slate. If you haven't done well the first half of the year now is your chance to change things around.
2. SAT Question of the Day will start again next week.
3. Review your Carroll's Wonderland notes for the quiz.
4. Make sure to bring in your copy of the novel.
5. Don't forget your Wonderland character homework.

Tuesday, January 19, 2010

Creating Characters for Wonderland

You will be turning yourself into a Wonderland character. Here are the components you must complete:
1. Give your character a name (be creative, rearrange the letters in your name, invent a name, etc.)
2. Create a creature -- you can draw your creature or print something out or cut and paste different parts together to create your creature. Your creature can be real or make believe (i.e. a cat, dog or a cat/dog)
3. Give a short description of your creature -- How does your creature reflect you as a person? For example, you are shy and reserved or loud and outgoing.

Remember to do this assignment on regular paper or printer paper because after I check it you will place it in your duotang folder for Alice in Wonderland.

If you have any questions please let me know.

Reminder: Friday from 9:00-10:00 we will be decorating the hallway to create our own Wonderland.

Friday, January 15, 2010

We will also start our next set of SAT Words Q-T. Here are those words so that you may define them and bring your definitions to class:

Reciprocate
Regale
Rendezvous
Rudimentary
Sacrilege
Sagacious
Satiate

If you need to make-up either the essay or multiple choice section of the midterm Thursday, January 21st is the last day to do so.

**Make sure you have your copy of Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll by Monday, January 25th. I will be checking and giving points for it. You can check the book out from a library, download it onto your phone, purchase a new or used copy, etc.

**You also need to obtain a duotang folder with pockets to create an Alice in Wonderland portfolio with all of the notes and activities we do. I will be checking it for a grade as we progress through the novel.

Looking ahead to the 3rd and 4th nine weeks, if you sign-up and take the SAT or ACT I will give you extra credit in the class once you have shown proof of registration. Remember the sooner you take it the better so that if you need to improve your score for your college applications you have time to do so.

Week of January 4-8 and upcoming Midterm schedule

Now that the first week back from the break is over most of you are back into the swing of things.
1. We watched "A Doll's House" based on the Henrik Ibsen play. We discussed some similarities and differences it had with The Awakening.
You turned in six examples of how the characters related to each other along with a letter to one of the characters. (worth 10 points)

Important Midterm schedule:
Wednesday, January 13th 2 &4 period exams
Thursday, January 14th 1 & 5 period exams
Friday, January 15th 3 & 6 period exams

We will be reviewing the class before so as an example, Monday I will review with my 4th period class for their exam on Wednesday.
The exam will consist of 50 questions dealing with Literary Terms, Native/Colonial American Unit, The Awakening novel, SAT Vocabulary, and Grammar Review.

I will also be closing my gradebook this coming week so any last minute make-up work needs to be turned in. No excuses.

Tuesday, January 5, 2010

A Doll's House Assignment

For the letter to one of the character's from "A Doll's House" please make sure you have the following:
1. Address one of the characters (i.e. Dear Nora or Dear Torvald)
2. Write them one page of what you think of their situation. Do you agree or disagree with what is happening to them? Make connections to The Awakening novel if possible. Be specific and use examples from the movie.
3. Conclude your letter (i.e. Sincerely or Fondly yours)

The letter does not have to be typed and if you want to do it on the back of your chart where you wrote down your six examples that is fine.

Also, don't forget your New Year's Resolutions or quotes!
