Mother's Day Assignment

Mother's Day is May 13th, and as a mother myself, I know it means a lot to get something that was handmade by your children.
You have the option to either create a card or placemat incorporating the following requirements:

1. A Quote -- The quote you find should represent your mother or be inspirational in some way. (1 point)

2. Favorite Memory -- You will write about a memory you have of your mother (could be typed if your handwriting is not that great). (2 points)

3. Picture -- The picture can be of you with her or just you or just her. (2 points)

4. Her name -- Place her name somewhere on the placemat. (1 points)

5. Creativity -- This is where your use of supplies, and the above components will come into play. (2 points)

The assignment is worth a total of 8 points and needs to be shown to me before you leave Friday, May 11th.

*If you would rather create the placemat for another female figure in your life that is fine. For example, you can make one for your grandmother, aunt, godmother, etc.

SAT Essay Topics

Here are the 3 essay prompts that you did in class (or if you were absent you can now make-up the rough draft).
Remember I will be collecting the final draft of one of these essays and you will be attaching all three rough drafts.

Prompt 1:
If we are afraid to reveal our lack of knowledge we will not be able to learn. In order to make progress we must admit where we are now. Such an admission of ignorance is not easy. As Thoreau says, “How can we remember our ignorance which our growth requires, when we are using our knowledge all the time?”
Assignment:
Does the present system of education encourage us to admit our lack of knowledge, or is there too much pressure to demonstrate the acquisition of knowledge? Plan your response, and then write an essay...

Prompt 2:
Many societies believe that the pursuit of happiness is a fundamental human right. But it is also true that attainment of happiness remains elusive. Perhaps Bertrand Russell had it right when he said, “To be without some of the things you want is an indispensable part of happiness.”
Assignment:
What gives us more pleasure and satisfaction: the pursuit of our desires or the attainment of them? Plan your response, and then write an essay...

Prompt 3:
There is usually a kernel of truth in the words Oscar Wilde puts in the mouth of his most outrageous characters – they wouldn’t be funny otherwise. One such gem that is worth pondering is: The only thing to do with good advice is to pass it on. It is never of any use to oneself.
Assignment:
Is it true that when we most need advice we are least willing to listen to it? Or is good advice always welcome? Plan your response, and then write an essay...

This is a major grade so do not procrastinate!
Final Drafts are due typed (12 pt font), double spaced by May 14th (Periods 1,3,5) or May 15th (Periods 2,4,6)
