Unit on Independence

This nine weeks we will focus on the idea of "independence." Our countries independence began with the Declaration of Independence and since then American writers have written about that idea in a plethora of ways. As we focus on our main novel of The Awakening we will also touch upon many other pieces of literature, music, art and film. Some writers include Emerson and Thoreau who were part of the Transcendentalist movement.

We will also continue to work on our writing. This quarter I will teach you how to write a definition essay. Not difficult, but a different form that you should know.
You will also be required to enter either the Scholastic Writing Awards contest or the Fairchild Challenge Opinion paper.
