Art Critique

The image above is titled "Moving In" by Norman Rockwell.

The image above is titled "The Problem we all live with" (also by Norman Rockwell)

Norman Rockwell is a well-known, 20th century American artist that depicted American life.

Now that we have finished reading A Lesson Before Dying and have read many pieces by African-Americans in reference to racism and civil rights, I want you to pick one of the images from above and post a comment to the blog answering the following:

1. Describe what you see in the image.

2. What does it mean to you or what message is the image sending?

3. Do you think it is a good representation of American life? (remember the time period is not today)

Make sure you post your comment by March 25th. This will be worth 5 points.

    1. Describe what you see in the image.
The main focus on this image is the colored girl. We can infer that she is heading towards school because she is carrying educational materials. I see a wall full of hatred. On the wall, “KKK” & “NIGGER” graffiti & a splashed tomato is shown. I detect four men walking along her.

    2. What does it mean to you or what message is the image sending?
“The Problem we all live with” portrays a violent face of America during the Civil Rights movement while sending a message of hope. In general, the picture screams courage over adversity. We see a brave girl, not accepted because she is considered “different” from what is considered “pure”, walking around an area where segregation is more than visible; all this effort to obtain the basic human right of equality.

    3. Do you think it is a good representation of American life?
Definitively, at the time, many African Americans were harassed in any form (verbally, physically and/or emotionally). They were in a dilemma between what they perceived of themselves and what the society did. Talking in general, every American has to work the ladder up to obtain what is desired; we see this situation developing today just as the young child had to overcome obstacles to triumph 50 years ago.

    1. The image shows men in suits with an African American girl behind them.
    2. The white men in suits are in front of the girl showing the idea that white people are ahead of black people in any way possible.
    3. This image is the correct representation of American life during that time because it presents popular belief during that time.

  3. "Moving In"
    1. Here in this image you can see two dark skinned children, which I assume are brothers and sisters, that have just moved in to the neighborhood. The boy is dressed in white while wearing shorts and the girl is dressed in a pink dress. She is also carrying a cat. You can infer that they are just moving in because their furniture is out in the yard and there is a moving truck. They are welcomed by a white neighborhood child with a dog.
    2. The image is sending the message that despite the racial issues between whites and blacks children have always been able to look beyond the skin color of a person to make new friends. This is given in the picture when you see a neighborhood child welcoming the new kids, whom happen to be black, to the block.
    3. Yes, I think it is a good representation of American life back in a simpler time. Back then, blacks were mostly treated unjustly but still there were some cases in which they didn;t experience hostility as shown in this picture by the neigboring white kids.

"The problem we all live with"
    1. Describe what you see in the image.
I see a colored girl who is probably walking to school since she has school materials in her hand. As well as she is walking behind to elderly men.

    2. What does it mean to you or what message is the image sending?
To me the message the image is sending is that this young colored girl is facing reality. All though things may not be the way she or any colored person wants it to be she is being strong and keeping her head held high.

    3. Do you think it is a good representation of American life? (remember the time period is not today)
I do think this picture is a good representation of american life because it shows segregation, you can see it, the words on the wall, the tomato that was thrown at the wall. These small things describe and show a person something that really did happen because segregation is no joke.

  5. 1. Describe what you see in the image.
In the image above i happen to recognize the two African American kids who to seem to be moving out of a rural community. Next to the truck is a woman holding a black dog which to me could be the kids mother.

    2. What does it mean to you or what message is the image sending?
To me this message is telling me that these African Americans are going threw hard times and have to move out. whether problems with work, family or even the neighborhood i find this image rather stereo typical.
    3. Do you think it is a good representation of American life? (remember the time period is not today) No because like i said this image seems rather stereo typical and just because they are black doesn't mean they should be moving out or so. there has to be more fortunate black people in this world.

    "Moving In"
    1. I see two black kids, a boy and a girl, whom I'm assuming are brother and sister. They're moving into this new neighborhood, as you can tell by all the furniture being brought in. Next to the truck is this white boy or man walking his dog, and by the looks of it the dog looks sort of taken back or scared for some reason.

    2. The image is sending an image that back then, blacks weren't really welcomed any were and that weren't treated fairly. As you can see, the man is looking at them with a sort of disgusted face and the dog isn't really jumping on them or nothing as they would usually do when greeting someone.

    3. Of back then, when everyone used to be unjust to blacks. It shows how people wouldn't really welcome them anywhere and how they were judged so easily.

    "Moving In"
    1. Describe what you see in the image.
This image shows two colored children moving into the neighborhood because there is a man taking out furniture into a moving truck onto the lawn. And being welcomed by a white boy.

    2. What does it mean to you or what message is the image sending?
It is sending a message how children can look beyond color to be friends, unlike the adults.

    3. Do you think it is a good representation of American life? (remember the time period is not today)
It could be a good representation of American life because it shows how beneath all the problems of racism, there are people who respect each other.

  8. 1. Describe what you see in the image.
In "Moving In" it shows two African American children, dressed very nice and neat, next to what seems to be a moving truck. At the right side of the picture you see a white skinned child with their dog. I can only assume that he is their to greet the two dark skinned children but he seems to be keeping his distance from them, making sure not to get to close.

    2. What does it mean to you or what message is the image sending?
In my opinion, the message in "Moving In" is that although the past gave African Americans a "bad name", whites can still interact with them and disregard the horrid past. Although this is a kind act, the white child seems a bit timid and hesitant to further approach the dark-skinned children and he seems to be be keeping his distance.

    3. Do you think it is a good representation of American life? (remember the time period is not today)
I really do think that "Moving In" is a good representation of American life but only after the Civil Rights movement because thats when the whites started to see that blacks weren't so different and they started to somewhat treat them as equals. Also, after the Civil Rights movement, African Americans started to get better paying jobs and could afford better clothing and better housing. All in all, yes I do think this picture is a good representation of American life.

"The problem we all live with"
    1. Describe what you see in the image.
In this image I see a little black girl who is walking on a sidewalk behind two taller white men. It looks as if the girl is going to school. The word "nigger" is on the wall and tomatoes have been thrown at it as well. The two men look kind of the same with something yellow wrapped around their arm.
    2. What does it mean to you or what message is the image sending? The message of the image is that white people think they are superior, hence the reason why they are taller and they would all act the same-- that's why the white people look the same. I see that the little girl, however, still walking and moving
on despite the fact that they are taller and they are "superior" to her.
    3. Do you think it is a good representation of American life? (remember the time period is not today)
I think that it is a good representation of American life because during that time a lot of racism occured and yet some blacks still stayed strong to fight for their freedom and the rights that they had of being equal in America. They wanted the American dream.

    “Moving In" by Norman Rockwell
    1. Describe what you see in the image.
The colored children are moving into a new house in, what seems to be, a white neighborhood. The little boy seems to be in awe and just staring at them and they as well are staring back at him. The thing that really caught my attention was the dog. The little dog is creeping back as if scared of the colored children. The dog seems scared to even approach these children as if they were some sort of monsters.
    2. What does it mean to you or what message is the image sending?
This image is showing the racial prejudice back in those times. The little white boy and his dog are in shock and don’t seem to want to approach the new neighbors. The dog really shows the sense of racial prejudice of those times.
    3. Do you think it is a good representation of American life? (Remember the time period is not today)
For those times, it is a good representation because this is how it was back then. The whites would see blacks as disgusting creatures that did not deserve to be in the room nor the same planet as them. It perfectly shows how things were back then.

    "Moving in"

    1. Describe what you see in the image.
I see two black children (possibly siblings) watching a white boy who's watching them (I thought he was black at first cause his hand looks black) and a moving man moving furniture in a neat neighborhood. The black girl is carrying a white cat while the white boy has leashed a black dog.

    2. What does it mean to you or what message is the image sending?
The message it is giving me is that children don't care about skin color the way adults do. Even though the black children and the white boy seem hesitant and shy towards each other, the mood does not seem hostile. I find it ironic how the black children house (and seem to treasure) a white pet, while the white boy has a black pet that he cares about as well (I mean, he's walking it, isn't he? I don't walk my dogs)

    3. Do you think it is a good representation of American life? (remember the time period is not today)

    HELL YEAH I DO
I remember watching the Little Rascals when I was younger, and it was filmed during those times. It showed how all those kids had adventures and were all buddies, despite skin color, because all they care about is having fun.

"The Problem We All Live With"

    1. Describe what you see in the image.
-I see a black girl that is walking behind two taller men. The little girl is carrying a book which means she's probably going to school. The word "Nigger" is very faint on the wall behind the girl and it seems as if tomotoes have been thrown at the wall since it's red. The only thing that I cannot distinguish from the image are the yellow bands that are around the mens' arms.

    2. What does it mean to you or what message is the image sending?
-The image tells me that whites think that they are better than blacks. Also, the little black girl is still standing and walking even though the white men are taller and kind of intimidating.

    3. Do you think it is a good representation of American life? (remember the time period is not today)
-I think its a bit good. In the era of racism and segregation, whites thought that anybody that wasn't white was nothing. But the little girl represents those that did stand up for what they were fighting for (i.e. Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and more). They didn't let the whites take control of everything. They still had some sort of hope and faith that blacks will eventually become "equal" and it did occur.

  13. "Moving In"
    1. What i see in the picture is a moving truck, which could represent the civil rights movement and the end to segregation and racism, our country moving into a different era. Secondly, there is a little black boy and girl, which are probably brother and sister and are being stared down by a young white boy and his dog. Oddly enough, the white boy's dog is standing close to him like he if he is scared of the new people moving in.

2.The picture is sending a message that everything needs to keep moving forward and that everyone needs to coexist together. This picture is a great example of the time period because all blacks were welcoming whites to deb considered their counterparts. While most white people were still disgusted and thought of blacks as animals, not humans.

3.This picture is a great representation of American Life during this time period. Most blacks wanted to start off on a clean slate with white Americans so they can be considered equals, not an animal. While some White Americans embraced the country coming to another generation of coexistence, others were confused at the thought of Negros being considered nothing more than animals.

I see a little girl walking behind two men,she has books and a writing utensil, i see a wall that has something that looks like smeared blood, i also can tell that the little girl is the center of attention of the picture, i know this painting is old because of the way the three people in it are dressed.

    2. What does it mean to you or what message is the image sending?
this painting means alot , it speaks out to those who feel like theyr left behind because of their skin color ,it also can relates to how women are looked at as the second before the men, becuase this is a man's world, and the day the concept of this picture is devoured ill be happy.

    3. Do you think it is a good representation of American life?
yes it is , it shows that pedestrians walk in the streets that we are multicultural and also its a representation of american history, which has alot to do with woman rights and racism.

    1. Describe what you see in the image.
in this image by Norman Rockwell we see a little black girl walking behind two bigger whites males. she has what looks like school notebook and looks like maybe she is going to school or going home from school. On the Wall the word Nigger is written and looks like someone threw some tomatoes at it.
    2. What does it mean to you or what message is the image sending?
To me this image is degrading the poor little black girl with the older men walking in front of her. to me the little girl is brave because she is behind two rather tall white men and she is still walking with her head up high and doesn't look intimidated.
    3. Do you think it is a good representation of American life? (remember the time period is not today)
This is a great picture representing the American life during the time period because it shows racism with what was written on the wall and the little black girl walking behind the white men, but also showing that blacks were strong and didn't put their head down.

~ Image 1: "Moving In" by Norman Rockwell.
    1) In the image we are portrayed with two young black children whom seem to be awaiting
as they unload the truck with their house belongings. We are also found with a young boy
standing on the opposite side of them who doesn't seem to crazy about the idea of them
moving into the neighborhood. Furthermore, there are two pets found in the picture. One is a
white cat who is being held by the small colored girl and a black dog who is standing in front
of the white young boy. The pets seem to be glancing at each other, but in my opinion the dog
seems to be conveyed as a little less harsh than the cat.

    2) The message that the image is sending me is that the small colored children are moving in
to the neighborhood but if it was up to them they wouldn't be there. The looks on their
faces are seems to be like the one given after a long sigh. Overall, what the image gives off to
me in general is that they're somewhere where they are not comfortable and isn't too home-ish.

    3) Personally, I believe it is a great representation of the American life. We are presented
with a setting, as well as with characters who's position and facial expressions in the image
are easy to grasp. Back then, blacks/colored people weren't welcomed all that greatly and the majority
of the times they had no choice but to have to cope with it; regardless of their emotions
the economic reasoning of their parents or guardians led them to having no choice but staying
wherever it was they belived was best for them to move into/live. Moreover, those who surrounded the
area in which they lived in, had the tendancy to judge automatically and give them nasty faces
    because of their skin color.

To me is showing how the girl is just following along the men just because she thinks she has to , she does not seem to happy , I think the message is to just keep moving along no matter what

    3. Do you think it is a good representation of American life? (remember the time period is not today)
I think it is because on the wall they have written nigger and back then they had that type of racism , where the blacks just had to accept what the whites said about them.

  18. "The Problem we all Live With"

    1. Describe what you see in the image.

In this image I see a young black girl, too young to be judged and discriminated against, walking by a wall with the word "nigger" written on it in what looks like blood. She is walking behind two men who look like well-dressed white men, probably helping her in some way. But besides everything going on in the picture, I see a very calm and mature young girl ready to face the world no matter how many may already be against her.

    2. What does it mean to you or what message is the image sending?

I think what the message Norman Rockwell is trying to portray is no person of color in that time period was left out of being judged.

    3. Do you think it is a good representation of American life? (remember the time period is not today)

I think it is a good representation of how life was back then. Blacks had to be escorted to class to avoid being bullied and attacked and not even little kids were safe from the other kids' hatred.

  19. 1. Describe what you see in the image.
In the second image, the viewer watches as a a small african girl walks behind two tall white males with yellow armbands. these men were guards that were walking the small girl in to school after the Brown vs. Board of education court case and a school segregation law was passed to integrate schools.

    2. What does it mean to you or what message is the image sending?
This picture sends the idea of blacks being thought of as a lower class , or how blacks where always in a way , behind whites. It shows the mindset of many Americans during this time period. And the issues that even included education.

    3. Do you think it is a good representation of American life? (remember the time period is not today)

In the image I see two young black children with a white cat that seem to be moving into the neighborhood because of the truck thats there. I also see a young white boy with his black dog. The message I am getting from the image is a sense of being unsure, whether or not they should be there.

    3. Do you think it is a good representation of American life? (remember the time period is not today)

Yes because it protrays how life was back in the day when whites thought they had more power than the blacks. It also gives us the feelings they felt when moving into a neighborhood that was mostly white and how they felt during that time, unsure.

    2. What does it mean to you or what message is the image sending?
This image shows and send a lot of emotion like hatred among black and whites because of what seems that its taken to a point where a young black girl is being escorted to school because of maybe her safety? and it also shows that maybe if this was a wealthy black family what kind of things would happen to the unwealthy black families like "Nigger" on the wall or a tomato thrown at them.
    3. Do you think it is a good representation of American life? (remember the time period is not today)
Yeah to some point I believe it represented American life quite well but we cant always say that this occurred all the time or everywhere, different places different events. But what is truly to the point is the separation of Black and Whites in those times.

    2. What does it mean to you or what message is the image sending?
    - The message that this picture is sending is that African Americans have always had to be the followers and taught to think that white people should be the leaders. Also, the KKK band shows the racism that whites had against African Americans even if they were innocent children.

    3. Do you think it is a good representation of American life?
    - Yes I do, it conveys the racism and unequality that African Americans had to face because of their skin color. It shows how whites back then believed that they were better than them and that they should in charge of everything because since the others were black their opinion "didn't count".

    1. Describe what you see in the image.
What I depict in the illustration is racism clearly all over the walls because the words" nigger, and KKK are written on it along with splashed tomatoes. This represents a degrading image for the blacks, because theyre not accepted like the whites are.

    2. What does it mean to you or what message is the image sending? The message its conveying, is that all the blacks are not met up to the white peoples standards, instead considered to the lowest extent possible.

    3. Do you think it is a good representation of American life? I think it is a really good demonstration of American life at that period of time, because racism was occuring that time, and the action of the racists having written those words, and the splashing of the tomatoes, shows a thousands words of what was happening during this time. It focuses on one of the main issues(racism) at that point.

    3. Do you think it is a good representation of American life?
    - For that time period, yes. During that time, whites claimed to be superior than blacks, which resulted in their discrimination and segregation for years to come. For me, the little girl is a symbol of those civil rights leaders at the time that stood up for equality. She obviously understands the situation, but thats not going to stop her from walking forward and getting an education. Words on the wall don't do much damage.

1)in this image i see a set of pretentious white men and a young colored girl in a segregated school. see the sadness and difficulties of segregation and racism.but most importantly i see a prideful young colored girl because even though she in the back she stands proud and firm.
2)i think the message this portrait has inscribe in it is to be happy with whom you are to not let anyone bring you down, to stand with pride and fall with honor. i deducted all this from the colored girls firm position she walks with her head up high. and the tight grip she has on her books which show she has allot of determination and will firmly grasp upon her desires.
    3) yes this is good representation of american life back in the day it shows the up stuck white men whom thought they were superior to every other race and the typical philosophy that whites are better then blacks. it also shows the black girl in the back which is where she would be place at the time.

    "Moving In"

    1. In "Moving In" i see two black children moving into a new white neighborhood. The little white boy is standing off to the side probably unsure of what is going on and you can see he is uneasy with the change in his neighborhood. During this time period blacks were probably being given equality and are "moving in" to the white man's world.

    2. The message i believe is given by the portrait is that after many years of having blacks under the whites, it will take time to adjust to the changes. The racism had gotten to the point where even the innocence of children was not enough to stop segregation and prejudice.

    3. To me it is a good representation of life during those times for the blacks. There was a lot of segregation between whites and blacks. The hanges of when they were given equal rights took time to sink in and actually make a difference in society.
