Earth Day / Take your son or daughter to work day

Okay, so I thought about it and decided to give an extra credit assignment in honor of Earth Day and Take your son or daughter to work day. Here are your two choices:

1. Explain 5 things that you currently do or could do to decrease your carbon footprint. Don't know what that means -- look it up and then give me your 5 examples. Consider saving paper and email it to me or post it to the blog.

2. If you go with your mom or dad to work on Thursday you have the following option: interview someone who works with your parents (ask them whether they enjoy what they do, what was their favorite class(es) when they were in high school, what advice would they give you before you graduate from high school). Make sure you include the name and position of the person you interview and the company and phone number they work for. I will verify whether the person works where you say they do, so don't embarrass me.

You have until Monday, April 26th to turn in your assignment for 5 points extra credit. If you do both that is great, but you will only get 5 points.

*Doing my weekly shopping in a single trip.
    *Using energy saving light bulbs.
*Hanging my clothes to dry rather than tumble drying them.
    *Recycling my water bottles.
    *Not eating so much meat.

  4. •Do your weekly errands in a single trip or pay your bills online, walk, bike and ride bus or carpool.

•Instead of using air conditioners in the summer wear cool clothes and use a fan.

•You will consume up to 25% less fuel if ytou drive no more than 90 km/hr.

•Consume less and reuse old products.

•Replace your incandescent bulb with a compact fluorescent light bulb (CFL). CFLs cost 3 to 5 times as much but use less than a third of the power. Also replace old fridges and other appliances with energy efficient ones.

*Turn off any electrical device when I'm not using it. Example: lights, computer, radio

*Substitute the conventional light bulbs with the low energy light bulbs
*Recycle things that can be used again. Example: plastic, cans, paper.
*Reuse products such as clothes, and water bottles.

  7. What I could do to decrease my carbon footprint is to continue to help clean, and remove invasive species from miami-dade parks every saturday. I can also begin to recycle at my house, things like paper and plastics. I can stop spraying toxic chemicals into the air as well, like hair sprays. I can buy myself a natural gas fueled car instead of one that runs on gasoline. Also, I can stop using herbicides and pesticides when it comes to the plants I have in my backyard. (Period 5)
